East Tyrol - during the whole year

High Tauern national park

Majestic power, deep quiet and nothing but wild alpine nature for kilometers on end: for more than 25 years now, the high Tauern national park stands for pure places in nature and wildlife surrounded by East Tyrol's 266 3000-meter peaks.

Gigantic, green and limitless. Those who set foot in the largest national park of the Alps, admire, enjoy and wonder with each step. The Tyrolean part of the High Tauern national park celebrated 25 years of existence in 2017.

Three federal states, one vision: preserving, protecting and making the nature that surrounds them accessible to everyone. The High Tauern national park is the largest national park in Central Europe. 1.856 km² of wild nature in total, 1.198 of those form the especially protected core zone. The national park extends to wide alpine landscapes like glaciers, cliffs and alpine meadows as well as alpine pastures that have been carefully maintained for centuries. 200 km² of forest, 766 bogs, 848 lakes and km² of glaciers provide a stunning variety. Moreover, the national park is home to about 10.000 animal species and 1.500 plants.
